A lot of critics are saying this new layout looks like Facebook, but that’s not a problem in our opinion. Since Facebook is the most popular social media site, Twitter can do itself a favour by adding that user familiarity to its own layout. One of the top reasons we’ve heard for people not using Twitter is they ‘don’t know what to do with it?’. By creating a more familiar layout and offering users an intuitive visual experience, Twitter can grow its user base.

New Dimensions
The new Twitter recommended dimensions are as follows:

Header image: 1500 pixels wide x 500 pixels high
Profile image: 400 pixels x 400 pixels

But, and this is the biggest issue, you don’t actually get all 500 pixels in height.

You actually lose 140 of those pixels to the margins which display your top menu bar and your list of tweets, followers, etc. at the bottom of the image.

HERE is the size that really works well for us:

1500px (wide) x 421px (high)

You’ll need our template to make this WORK for you…

Important: You Really Need This Template
Twitter’s new header setup is quite complicated. You will lose the original quality of your image after the upload, so I recommend you to save your work in its highest quality.

Another problem is, the whole content of your image won’t fit in the header area since it automatically gets cropped and upscaled for some reason, so you need to know the ‘visible’ and ‘invisible’ areas to make sure your followers can view what you want them to see on your header image. Here’s the template I’ve made:

  • Do not add anything in the ‘invisible areas’ or they will not show up.
  • This template has been tested in different screen resolutions and in Twitter app using iPhone (5).
  • You may still use the ‘invisible on iPhone app’ parts but we recommend not placing anything important in these areas.

We hope this size guide and these tips help you format your new Twitter header image. If you found this helpful or think someone else would find this helpful, please share this post!
